Word counter and character counter
Count words, characters and phrases, estimate delivery time and check writing goals while your text stays in your browser.
Conversions replace the text above. Restore original returns to the text before your first change. Undo and redo retain up to 20 changes while this page stays open.
Developer cases
Applies only to camelCase, PascalCase and CONSTANT_CASE. Removes accents, converts letters such as ł and ß, and drops characters that cannot be converted to ASCII. Other modes preserve accents.
Quick text cleanup
Check a draft as you write
- Paste or type your draft into the word counter, then choose the language used in the text.
- Compare words, characters with and without spaces, sentences, paragraphs and lines.
- Select a preset character target or enter a custom character limit or word goal to see what remains.
- Adjust the reading and speaking speeds, then inspect repeated words or two- and three-word phrases.
- Copy the draft or download a .txt file; enable browser storage only if you want the text retained.
Editing tasks supported by the counter
- Shorten a social caption against a visible character target.
- Track progress towards an assignment's required word count.
- Estimate the duration of a speech using your own delivery pace.
- Spot repeated expressions before revising an article.
- Compare a draft's character count with spaces against a copywriting brief.
How the counts are calculated
Why can this count differ from Word?
Browser language segmentation decides word boundaries, including numbers, apostrophes, hyphens and languages without spaces. Other editors may apply different rules, so use the required editor's count when submitting work.
Do emoji and accented letters count as one character?
With browser grapheme segmentation, each combined emoji or accented letter counts as one. An approximate fallback may split combined characters; the page shows a notice when that fallback is used.
What do the time estimates assume?
Defaults are 238 words per minute for reading and 140 for speaking. Thus, 476 words take an estimated two minutes to read. Both speeds are adjustable; durations round up to whole seconds.
Are the preset limits exact platform validators?
No. Targets are X 280, SMS 160, meta title 60, meta description 160, LinkedIn 3000 and Instagram 2200 characters. Platform counting, SMS encoding and search preview widths may differ.
How is keyword density calculated?
Share uses all words or eligible phrase windows before filtering. Phrases overlap but do not cross sentence punctuation or line breaks. Optional common-word filtering supports English, Polish and German.
Can I recover cleared text or keep a draft?
Undo clear is available for ten seconds unless you type again. Optional storage retains text in this browser profile; unchecking removes that saved copy. Other users of the profile may access it.
