How to remove a background
- Click Open image, drop a photo on the box above or paste one with Ctrl+V.
- The AI starts by itself. On the first run it downloads its model once; after that a photo takes a few seconds.
- Look at the cut-out on the checkerboard. For hair, fur or fine edges set Quality to High and run it again.
- Keep the transparent background, or choose a colour and press Fill background for a white or coloured one.
- Press Download PNG to save the result in the original size of your photo.

How the AI cut-out works
The page runs BiRefNet, a segmentation model published under the MIT licence, inside your browser through WebGPU. The model looks at a scaled copy of the photo, 512 or 1024 pixels on each side depending on the quality, and estimates for every pixel how likely it belongs to the main subject. That estimate is stretched back over the original picture as its alpha channel, so edges such as hair keep partial transparency instead of a hard outline. The model file is downloaded once and cached; the photo itself stays in the memory of your device.
Questions about removing backgrounds
Is this background remover really free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no limit on the number of images, and the download keeps the full resolution of your photo instead of a small preview.
Is my photo uploaded to a server?
No. The cut-out is computed on your own device, so the image is never sent anywhere. Only the AI model, about 100 MB, is downloaded on the first run and then kept by your browser.
Which browsers can run it?
It needs WebGPU, which current Chrome, Edge and Safari offer on computers and many phones. Without it the page tells you so, and the colour tools for plain backgrounds still work.
How do I get a white background?
After the background is gone, keep white in Background colour, press Fill background and download. Any other colour works the same way, which helps with shop listings and ID-style photos.
Why are some edges not perfect?
Very fine hair, glass, smoke and subjects that blend into the background are hard for any model. Try High quality, or clear what is left with Pick color and Magic wand below the AI section.
What file do I get?
A PNG file, the usual format for pictures with transparency. It has the same width and height as the photo you opened.
Can I remove a background on my phone?
Yes, in a mobile browser with WebGPU, for example Chrome on Android or Safari on iOS 26. Phones start with Standard quality, which is faster and needs less memory.
